Hello Law Is Fun users:
Wanted to let you know about a new and controversial website sparking debate nationwide over privacy and freedom of speech.

With the Internet providing public arenas for citizens to rate services ranging from restaurants to hotels, the popular new online resource RATEMYCOP.com has sparked controversy over right-to-privacy and freedom of speech. When I took on this project, I knew instantly it would garner attention, but I had no idea how much! It's been absolutely insane. Please feel free to visit my MySpace blog http://www.myspace.com/polarispublicity. I will be updating as legislation and more debate heats up.

RATEMYCOP.COM is an online forum that allows citizens to rank police officers and post anonymous feedback about their performance. Since its February 28, 2008 launch, RATEMYCOP.com has received over 200,000 hits per day from grateful citizens eager to access the site’s growing, searchable database of 140,000 law enforcement officers from over 500 agencies nationwide. RATEMYCOP.com users can search for law enforcement personnel by state or name, then rank their officer on Professionalism, Fairness and Satisfaction. Written feedback, whether good, bad or indifferent, can also be provided. While we encourage users to critique the agencies and officers within their communities, we hope they do so responsibly.

Some agencies concerned over officer safety are seeking legislative measures to shut us down. However, RATEMYCOP.com only publishes existing public information and the site does not include undercover officers or personal information.

We believe that citizens should have the right to publicly critique the agencies and officers sworn to “protect and serve.” What do you think?
